AFSCME International Union, based in Washington, D.C., represents locals and affiliates at the national level — lobbying Congress and the White House — and coordinates the union’s activities on major issues that affect the members, such as privatization, taxes, health care and Social Security. The International helps councils and local unions mount organizing campaigns, provides technical assistance and support for political action, bargaining and training, and administers a package of members-only benefits such as a low-interest-rate credit card, home mortgages, legal assistance, and scholarships for members’ children.
